Periods.. love them, hate them?

Menstrual cycles... Half us humans have them, yet a lot of us don't talk about them, not really.

A lot of us feel shame, disgust, embarrassment when anything to do with our hormones is even mentioned. But why?

Like a lot of other teenage girls I was told to go on the pill by a Doctor, not really any questions asked or answered and that was it.

Good bye natural cycles, no periods, no highs no lows.. perfect right?

No! (at least not for me) coming off hormonal contraceptives has been one of the best things I have ever done. I feel I have woken up from the longest sleep. My body is really alive and it even talks to me. Ovulating is a gift, its a power. It's a time where you feel so alive, have so much energy and can really 'get shit done.'

Equally, having your period can be the most amazing thing too! A time where your internal rhythm/cycle/ body clock is telling you to surrender, to rest, to nourish your body with proper food and to take time to work on yourself and step away from the busy outside world. You're thinking 'ahh that sounds nice. If it wasn't for the crippling cramps, the foggy attention span, short temper, low energy etc.'

What if your beautiful body is not something to fight against, to numb, to ignore whilst you get on with your busy life. No, she is talking to you and this pain is her way of crying out for attention, needing more rest, more love, more recognition.

I personally LOVE tracking my cycle and it has become a pretty special ritual for me, but it doesn't need to take up that much time. My point is, talk about your body, listen to your body. Do what is right for YOU and not what other people tell you is best.

Take time to question what you want. There is so much information and books out there to help us learn more but most importantly, do not be scared of the power and magic of your own cycle. Do not be scared to talk about something so natural and so beautiful.
